Mr. Massoud Samiei

Massoud Samiei, was born in Mash'had, Iran. He completed his first university degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Teheran in 1971. In 1973 he left Iran to further pursue his studies at Imperial College in London, where he obtained an M.S. in Thermal Power Engineering, a Diploma in Business Management, and in 1979 his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering. Mr. Samiei has extensive management experience in nuclear power, fuel cycle and research reactor projects. He started his professional career in Mexico's Nuclear Research Centre in 1980 where he worked on nuclear fuel design and performance analysis. During 1983-89 he worked at Kraftwerk Union AG in Germany for a number of international nuclear power plant projects.

In 1989, he joined the IAEA's Department of Technical Cooperation with responsibilities for countries in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. He was promoted to the Head of Europe Region in 1993, a post he was holding until February 2005. In this capacity he was responsible for the formulation of Technical Cooperation programmes of the many recipient Member States in Europe and the former Soviet Union, particularly in the shaping up of the IAEA's human health, environmental remediation, nuclear safety, nuclear power, research reactor and nuclear security related assistance to this region. In February 2005, he was appointed to manage "Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy" (PACT). PACT is expected to raise funds to help developing countries put into place and get full access to a comprehensive cancer control infrastructure including treatment.
