ReNuAL

Soil and Water Management and Crop Nutrition Lab (SWMCNL)

The SWMCNL is part of the Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture. It assists Member States in the development and transfer of isotopic and nuclear technologies to improve the resilience of farmers' communities to climate change and variability by optimizing soil, water and nutrient management practices. The SWMCNL also helps Member States to be better prepared in responding to nuclear emergencies affecting food and agriculture, as well remediating the impact of these events on soil and agricultural water resources.

The benefits of the ReNuAL project

The benefits of modernisation of the SWMCNL will be an increased capacity to respond efficiently and effectively to existing and new challenges, such as climate change adaptation and mitigation, increasing concern for the conservation of agricultural resources, and nuclear emergency response in food and agriculture. The isotope and nuclear techniques developed by SWMCNL will be robust and affordable, permitting research in the laboratory and in the field under on-farm conditions. Training and research capacities will be improved, allowing Member States to receive improved and more applicable technologies for the development of their own programmes to optimize soil, water and nutrient management for ensuring food security.
