Summary

This paper documents the support programme of the Joint FAO/IAEA Division to the Pan African Rinderpest Campaign from 1986 to 1994. It describes the rationale behind this programme, highlighting the development and use of the rinderpest ELISA kit, the establishment of a laboratory network and the transfer of ELISA based systems to the 22 national veterinary laboratories in the network. It details the various FAO/IAEA Co-ordinated Research and Technical Cooperation Projects that have provided the programme of sero-monitoring support to be effectively developed and sustained. Data on national immunity levels to rinderpest are summarised.
