Summary

This special issue contains the peer reviewed papers from participants in a FAO/IAEA CRP entitled ‘Use of Nuclear and Related Techniques to Develop Simple Tannin Assays for Predicting and Improving the Safety and Efficiency of Feeding Ruminants on Tanniniferous Tree Foliage’. This CRP was initiated in 1999 with the objective of validating tannin assays and using them to exploit the potential benefits of tanniniferous plants as animal feed supplements and as strategic feeds in situations of fluctuating nutrient supply. Some selected papers from those presented during the final review meeting are presented in this volume. These papers deal with refinement and standardization of nuclear, chemical and biological assays for measuring tannins, and development of strategies for enhancing utilization of tree leaves as livestock feed.
Workers from developing countries conducting research on tannin assays and utilization of tannin-containing feed resources can request for a free copy of the special issue of the journal.
