Applied Radiation Biology and Radiotherapy

Completed Co-ordinated Research Projects

CRP Number: E3.30.24
CRP Title: Radiobiological and Clinical Study on Viral-induced Cancers response to Radiotherapy
Objective: to Test a resource-sparing radiotherapy treatment for cervix cancer, and to gather knowledge of factors that will predict tumour resistancer.
Number of RCMs: 1
Next RCM: 2007
Year of Commencement: 2004
Number of Contract Holders: 8

CRP Number: E3.30.21
CRP Title: The role of teletherapy (TT) supplementary to intraluminal high dose rate (ILHDR) brachytherapy (BT) in the palliation of advanced oesophageal cancer
Objective: To improve radiation therapy treatment of advanced malignancies by adapting protocols to local conditions in developing Member States; produce effective radiotherapy protocols or guidance for use in treatment of advanced malignancies in developing countries and validate clinical radiotherapy management protocols which offer significant resource-sparing (personnel and equipment) in the management of advanced cancers
Number of RCMs: 2
Next RCM: 2006
Year of Commencement: 2002
Number of Contract Holders: 9

CRP Number: E3.50.07
CRP Title: Comparative assessment of teletherapy modalities
Objective: To provide Member States through the Agency valid data to evaluate the costs of competing nuclear technologies used in the practice of radiation oncology. This data should reflect the reality of developed and developing countries. There is no alternative to the two competing technologies
Number of RCMs: 0
Next RCM: 2001
Year of Commencement: 2001
Number of Contract Holders: 11

CRP Number: E3.30.20
CRP Title: HIV markers in patients treated with radiotherapy for cervical cancer
Objective: To promote research in radiotherapy with applicability to the problems of developing countries. To determine if the incidence of cervical cancer is increased in HIV positive patients in countries where both diseases are epidemic and to determine if standard therapy is detrimental to the survival of these patients.
Number of RCMs: 1
Year of Commencement: 2000
Number of Contract Holders: 10

CRP Number: E3.30.18
CRP Title: Aspects of radiobiology applicable in clinical radiotherapy - increase of the number of fractions per week
Objective: To determine the possible therapeutic gain and clinical benefit achieved by reducing overall treatment time in the radiation treatment of patients with head and neck cancer who are candidates for primary radiotherapy
Number of RCMs: 2
Next RCM: 2005
Year of Commencement: 1998
Number of Contract Holders: 8

CRP Number: E3.30.17
CRP Title: Regional hyperthermia combined with radiotherapy for locally advanced cancers
Objective: The clinical benefits of combined radiotherapy for locally advanced lung cancers and pelvic tumors are clinically investigated by a multi-institutional prospective randomized trial. The primary result is to clarify whether the combination of hyperthermia and radiotherapy has a greater effect on the tumor with regard to local control, as compared to radiotherapy alone.
Number of RCMs: 2
Next RCM: 2002
Year of Commencement: 1997
Number of Contract Holders: 12
