Project Summary
Ground-breaking challenge
There are many aquifers in the world where more exploration and understanding are needed, just as in the NSAS. That’s a rather scary prospect given that some aquifer reserves, arid areas included, are non-renewable. Given this global context, the ‘IAEA/UNDP/GEF Nubian Project’ is ground-breaking, cutting-edge and challenging. Most likely, it’s also a new frontier for the world.
Project partners
- UNDP/GEF as Implementing Agency
- IAEA as Executing Agency, lead technical agency on the scientific component and principal co-funding agency
- UNESCO and its ISARM partners as co-funding and cooperating agencies
- NSAS countries
- Joint NSAS Authority as lead regional institution
- Project Steering Committee, Project Implementation Unit
Project goals and objectives
The long-term goal of the project is to establish a rational and equitable management of the NSAS for sustainable socio-economic development and the protection of biodiversity and land resources. The project’s four immediate objectives are: identify priority transboundary threats and root causes; fill key gaps; prepare a Strategic Action Programme (SAP); and establish the framework to implement the SAP.
Project-wide considerations
The project faces a number of considerations that should guide and influence its overall implementation process. These include integration with national and regional programmes, the need for an effective monitoring network and modelling, inter-linkages with the Nile River Basin, sustainable funding sources and a commitment to regular project communications.
