The Project

Project Partners

The project partners have been carefully selected to ensure that the people and institutions with the best current knowledge about the area, the science, management and the law, work and cooperate together to produce optimal outputs. This includes local partners, scientific and legal experts and international organizations.

UNDP/GEF

The Global Environment Facility (GEF), established in 1991, helps developing countries fund projects that protect the global environment. The GEF ‘International Waters (IW)’ focal area targets trans-boundary water systems including several projects focusing on shared aquifers. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the ‘Implementing Agency’ for the project, responsible for overall project delivery and for reporting directly to GEF.

IAEA, UNESCO, Countries, Joint Authority

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) serves as ‘Executing Agency’ for the project. This includes responsibility for overall project management and assuring that the project delivers the expected results. As a ‘Cooperating Organization’, UNESCO will guide the implementation of the legal component of the project. The four NSAS countries are the main beneficiaries. In many respects, the Nubian Project is a test case as to what extent the four NSAS countries can further their cooperation. The NSAS Joint Authority will provide the institutional framework at the regional level.

PSC and PIU

The Project Steering Committee (PSC) will provide guidance for project implementation. The Project Implementation Unit (PIU) implements project activities in the field and reports to the PSC.
