Education and Training

Many research reactors are located at universities and serve as key tools in higher education.

DISSEMINATION AND PRESERVATION OF KNOWLEDGE

Training at the Austrian Atominstitut

Research reactors have the potential to create awareness of the advantages of nuclear technology for social development including the many medical applications. Students as well as the interested public can be educated about the use of research reactors and neutrons.

Many research reactors have been built on university premises. Being located alongside academic institutions has been an added advantage for research reactor’s contributions to higher education.

HANDS-ON TRAINING

Every research reactor is an important tool of advanced learning and education.

This application should be thoroughly explored and utilized to the benefit of the community.

  • Providing hands-on training in the area of nuclear science, radiation protection, nuclear instrumentation and reactor physics.
  • Developing know-how for the design and operation of nuclear power plants. Research Reactors also offer the platform for training operators of nuclear power plants in many countries.
  • The science students gain a broad comprehension of the utilization of research reactors through scientific visits and demonstration experiments. First hand experience on "seeing" the irradiation of samples (e.g. environmental samples or hair) for elemental investigation can give an impression on the powerful analysis possible with research reactors. Neutron scattering experiments during training courses help to understand materials and show the power of research reactor applications.
