SUPPORTING ACTIVITIES
In order to promote the effective utilization of research reactors, the IAEA provides expert advice, equipment, training and fellowships through technical cooperation (TC) projects, organizes coordinated research projects (CRP), conferences and technical meetings. The IAEA physics section provides technical expertise to these activities, sponsors technical meetings on research reactor utilization and publishes documents explaining how reactors can be used for numerous applications. The IAEA also supports Member States in building up their regulatory bodies, strengthening operating organizations and with key issues involving physical security. Primary consideration is given to strategic plans for utilization, fuel management plans, ageing management plans, and refurbishment, modernization and decommissioning plans. At the request of Member States, the IAEA has developed a ‘Code of Conduct on the Safety of Research Reactors’, which aids in the safe operation and utilization of reactors. The IAEA recently published a strategic planning guide for research reactors. It also provides support to regional training courses for research reactor personnel. |
