INTRODUCTION

The 16 th IAEA TM on “Research Using Small Fusion Devices” will be held in Mexico City, hosted by the Government of Mexico through the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The local Host representative is Dr. Julio Herrera, from the Instituto de Ciencias Nucleares, UNAM.

Previous meetings were held in 1985 Budapest, 1986 Nagoya, 1988 Nice, 1990 Washington DC, 1991 Hefei, 1992 Wuerzburg, 1993 Campinas, 1994 Madrid, 1995 Ahmedabad, 1996 Prague, 1997 Cairo, 1998 Tokyo, 1999 Chengdu, 2002 Sao Paulo and 2003 Vienna.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the meeting is to provide a forum for discussion of approaches to fusion research based on small and medium scale devices, such as small tokamaks, compact tori, reversed field pinches (RFP), helical devices, linear/discharge machines, etc. The meeting will also cover other devices: non-magnetic confinement devices, devices using beams or lasers and new trends or innovation concepts for fusion research.

TOPICS

MEETING FORMAT

The meeting will consist of invited and contributed oral presentations, poster session , and a summary session .

It is expected that invited talks, will be 30 minutes plus 5 minutes discussion and session talks will be ~20 minutes with ~3 minutes for discussion. Poster sessions shall be used for longer discussions. An overhead projector for transparencies and an electronic projector with a computer capable of reading CD's and memory sticks will be available (Power Point or pdf recommended).

The official language of the meeting is English (no interpretation will be provided). It is expected that the meeting will start at 09:00 on 30 November 2005 and end by 16:00 on 2 December 2005 . A short summary of the meeting, including recommendations, will be presented and approved during the Summary session (last session).

The abstracts will be selected and classified by the International Program Committee into oral and poster presentations.

PARTICIPATION

About 50 persons from IAEA Member States or international organizations are expected to attend. Participants should be persons actively involved in the topics of the meeting.

In order to participate in the meeting, the following major steps must be completed:

(1) ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

A one page abstract must be submitted no later than 20 August 2005. The abstract may be text only or contain figures and graphics, but must be only one page long. It must contain the authors' names, affiliation and e-mail address. Acceptable file formats are Microsoft Word (preferred) or PDF. The filename should be in the following format: "lastname.i.n.i.t.i.a.l.s.-topic.filetype" , for example, Spitzer.I.N.-D.doc or Spitzer.I.N.-D.pdf.

Important : Contributors of material to be included in the Agency proceedings are required to assign all copyrights or rights to publish to the Agency. Please complete and sign form B and send it together with the abstract copy to the IAEA Scientific Secretary by post or email (please see address at the end of this announcement).

The authors should make sure that the files do not include copyrighted fonts or other impediments for reproduction.

Authors will be informed on the acceptance of their contributions by e-mail, by 20 September 2005 .

The abstract shall be prepared according to the following instructions:

1) Page size: LETTER (21.59 mm by 27.94 mm) – vertical orientation

2) Margins 25mm all around

3) Layout:

Title: single-spaced, 14-point size, Times New Roman Font, bold
Authors: single-spaced, 12-point size, Times New Roman Font
Affiliation: single-spaced, 12-point size, Times New Roman Font, italic
Text: 1.5 spaced, 12-point size, Times New Roman Font
Length: one page

Important: In case of sending Microsoft Word files, authors should use True Type Embedded Fonts (w hen saving the file, click Tools, then Options, and tick Embed True Type fonts. This will help prevent change of fonts when the file is read in a different system as it will be most of the cases).

A Book of Abstracts will be compiled for free distribution at the meeting to every participant.

(2) IAEA PARTICIPATION (Form A submission)

A participant will be accepted only if the Participation Form A is transmitted to the IAEA through the appropriate Governmental representative authority (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Atomic Energy Authority). In the case the participant intends to give a contribution, the abstract should be attached .

(3) EXPENDITURES AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT

No registration fee will be charged by the IAEA for participants to participate in the meeting. Host services such as accommodation, meals, social programmes, etc., are to be arranged between participants and the Host representative.

As a general rule, the IAEA does not pay the costs for attendance to the meeting (i.e. travel and living expenses) of participants. However, limited funds are available to help meet the cost of attendance and participation of a few selected specialists mainly from developing countries with low economic resources. Generally, not more than one grant will be awarded to any one developing country. The grants awarded will be in the form of lump sums usually covering part of the cost of attendance.

If governments wish to apply for a grant on behalf of one of their specialists, they should address specific requests to the IAEA Scientific Secretary at the International Atomic Energy Agency to this effect. Governments should ensure that applications for grants:

a) are received by the IAEA before 20 August 2005

b) are accompanied by a duly completed and signed Grant Form C and an estimate of a valid travel agent of the flight costs from/to the duty city in their country and Vienna.

c) the participant has an accepted contribution

Applications that do not comply with the conditions mentioned above cannot be considered.

Awards will be announced around 20 September 2005 .

(4) VISA

Designated participants who require a visa to enter Mexico should submit the necessary application to the nearest diplomatic or consular representative of Mexico as soon as possible. A letter of invitation, if needed, can be requested from:

Submission of proceeding PAPERS :

Electronic versions of papers will be collected at the meeting . A manuscript of about 7 pages for Presentations and 5 pages for Posters shall be prepared for inclusion on the meeting proceedings published by IAEA (it will be available on the web and will include presentations as well). Authors should pass it at the registration desk on the first day of the meeting ( 30 Nov. 2005 ).
