BACKGROUND
The development of core structural materials for fusion and advanced fission reactors will require the availability of suitable materials irradiation and testing facilities, and a supply of materials damaged under fusion and fast fission relevant conditions. The use of ion beam accelerators to simulate the intense neutron irradiations and high damages by fusion and fission neutron spectrums is helping to understand the main physical mechanisms of radiation damage resistance in materials.

During the last 10-15 years, many interesting experimental results on radiation swelling and creep, radiation hardening, and helium embrittlement of materials have been obtained under neutron and charged particle irradiations. However, a detailed comparison and understanding of these experimental results (temperature and dose dependencies, effects of accumulation of hydrogen and helium atoms in the matrix, etc) under neutron irradiations in fission reactors, spallation neutron sources and charged particle irradiations either does not exist or is very sparse.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this Technical Meeting is to enhance, through sharing of information and experience, the use of ion beam irradiations to effectively simulate neutron irradiations of future fusion and fission reactor materials at high damages. It is anticipated this will lead to an improvement in the standardization, comparison and evaluation of experimental data for a wider range of materials and for a greater range of operating conditions. Specific objectives are:

PARTICIPATION
Persons from IAEA Member States or invited international organizations are eligible to attend. Online pre-registration is open for all interested participants, however all further steps specified below must be completed otherwise final registration will not be accepted. For online pre-registration please follow the link Online pre-registration.

  1. Nomination: A participant can be accepted only if a duly completed Participation Form (FORM A) is transmitted though the appropriate Governmental representative authority (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Atomic Energy Authority, etc) and received by the IAEA Secretariat by 25 September 2009.
  2. Abstract: Persons wishing to participate should submit an abstract, maximum one page total length, in electronic format directly to the Scientific Secretary (N.Dytlewski@iaea.org) by 25 September 2009. All abstracts will be evaluated and informed of their acceptance by email. The programme agenda will be prepared containing accepted abstracts and emailed to all participants as a PDF file.
  3. Papers for publication: This meeting’s proceedings may be assembled into a document to be published by the IAEA under one of its Scientific and Technical Publications series. Contributors of material to be included in any IAEA publication are required to assign all copyrights or rights to publish to the IAEA using the Paper Submission Form (FORM B) to be received by the IAEA Secretariat by 25 September 2009. The authors should ensure that the materials they contribute do not include copyrighted fonts or other impediments to publication.

Financial Support
Limited financial support may be made available to assist the attendance of selected participants and approved in accordance with the current IAEA rules and regulations. In general, only one financial grant is awarded per Member State. Participants from developing countries wishing to be considered for financial support must complete and submit a Grant Application Form (FORM C) to the IAEA Secretariat by 25 September 2009. There is no registration fee.

MEETING FORMAT
The meeting will start at 9:00 on Monday 16 November and conclude by 17:00 on Thursday 19 November. An electronic projector with PC capable of reading CDs and memory sticks will be available (Power Point of Acrobat preferred).

LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS
An official letter of invitation will be issued to all accepted participants by the IAEA well in advance of the meeting, as will information on suggested accommodation, local transport to/from the IAEA and other organizational details. It is the responsibility of all participants to make their own visa, travel and accommodation arrangements.
