- Introduction
During the last decade, demanding nuclear physics experiments and innovative applications have driven unique developments in nuclear instrumentation related primarily to radiation detectors, tagging techniques and data acquisition systems, designed for accelerator-based experiments. In all cases, it was the requirement for accumulating and subsequently processing signals resulting from extremely high counting rates that pushed for significant improvements in nuclear instruments. Continuously increasing demand for handling large amounts of data within very short processing times (high speed information processing) led to a new generation of powerful electronics for signal processing. In addition, many applications needed to increase the number of channels integrated in electronic devices and design specific signal manipulation algorithms. As a result, users developed new devices, many of which are now commercially available. Due to these developments, data acquisition systems have changed drastically over the years.
The Nuclear Science and Instrumentation Laboratory, part of the Physics Section of IAEA, is dedicated to training scientists and engineers from IAEA Member States in nuclear instrumentation involving data acquisition systems. The Nuclear Science and Instrumentation Laboratory helps Member States’ laboratories to use and adapt systems according to their needs.
This Technical Meeting will focus on the latest trends and developments in data acquisition systems with the objective of disseminating knowledge and experience to scientists from IAEA Member States in the field of nuclear instrumentation.
- Objectives
The purpose of thTechnical Meeting is to technically assess existing state of the art data acquisition instruments and systems used in accelerator-based experiments; to enhance interaction among experts working on technical issues of such systems; to disseminate new knowledge to scientists and engineers from IAEA Member States in the field of nuclear instrumentation; and to document the challenges and needs for future developments in related nuclear instrumentation.
- Target Audience
The meeting will be of interest to professionals involved in the field of accelerator-based nuclear and applied nuclear physics experiments or individuals who have been designated by their national authorities to provide an assessment of their country’s needs in these fields. Individuals wishing to be considered for participation are expected to submit a short abstract covering their work relevant to the objectives of the meeting.
- Working Language
The official language of the meeting will be English. No interpretation will be provided.
- Expected Outputs
The experience and material collected during the meeting will be used for possible dissemination to Member States in the form of an IAEA technical publication. Contributors of material to be included in the IAEA proceedings are required to assign all copyrights or rights to publish to the IAEA. Please complete and sign the attached Form for Submission of a Paper (Form B) and send it to the IAEA Scientific Secretary (see Section M below) by email. The authors should ensure that material they make available for possible publication by the IAEA does not include copyrighted material or other impediments to reproduction.
- Topics
The Technical Meeting will cover the following topics:
- State of the art of data acquisition systems for small and medium scale accelerator experiments
- Current needs in the development of data acquisition systems for specific experiments
- Homemade data acquisition systems developed by accelerator laboratories
- Software developments for data acquisition systems
- Future trends in data acquisition systems design
- Plans for IAEA support to Member States according to their needs in data acquisition systems.
- Participation and Registration
All persons wishing to participate in the event have to be designated by an IAEA Member State or should be members of organizations that have been invited to attend.
In order to be designated by an IAEA Member State, participants are requested to send the Participation Form (Form A) to their competent national authority (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Mission to the IAEA or National Atomic Energy Authority) for onward transmission to the IAEA by 15 March 2019. Participants who are members of an organization invited to attend are requested to send the Participation Form (Form A) through their organization to the IAEA by above deadline.
Selected participants will be informed in due course on the procedures to be followed with regard to administrative and financial matters.
Please note that the IAEA is in a transition phase to manage the entire registration process for all regular programme events electronically through the new InTouch+ (https://intouchplus.iaea.org) facility, which is the improved and expanded successor to the InTouch platform that has been used in recent years for the IAEA’s technical cooperation events. Through InTouch+, prospective participants will be able to apply for events and submit all required documents online. National authorities will be able to use InTouch+ to review and approve these applications. Interested parties that would like to use this new facility should write to: InTouchPlus.Contact-Point@iaea.org.
- Papers and Presentations
The IAEA encourages participants to give presentations on the work of their respective institutions that falls under the topics listed in Section F above.
Participants who wish to give presentations are requested to submit an abstract of their work. The abstract will be reviewed as part of the selection process for presentations. The abstract should be in A4 page format and should extend to no more than1 page (including figures and tables). It should be sent electronically to Natko Skukan and Sotirios Charisopoulos, the Scientific Secretaries of the event (see contact details in Section M below), not later than 15 March 2019. Authors will be notified of the acceptance of their proposed presentations by 15 April 2019. The selected authors will be requested to prepare and submit their presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint or PDF format by 20 May 2019, the latest.
In addition, participants have to submit the abstract together with the Participation Form (Form A) and the attached Form for Submission of a Paper (Form B) to their competent national authority (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Mission to the IAEA or National Atomic Energy Authority) or their organization for onward transmission to the IAEA not later than 15 March 2019.
No hard advertising of the products will be allowed. However, the participants from the companies, as observers will have an opportunity to present their developments in the form of oral presentation.
- Expenditures and Grants
No registration fee is charged to participants.
The IAEA is generally not in a position to bear the travel and other costs of participants in the event. The IAEA has, however, limited funds at its disposal to help meet the cost of attendance of certain participants. Upon specific request, such assistance may be offered to normally one participant per country, provided that, in the IAEA’s view, the participant will make an important contribution to the event.
The application for financial support should be made using the Grant Application Form (Form C) which has to be stamped, signed and submitted by the competent national authority to the IAEA together with the Participation Form (Form A) by 15 March 2019.
- Venue
The event will be held at the Vienna International Centre (VIC) where the IAEA’s Headquarters are located. Participants must make their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
General information on the VIC and other practical details, such as a list of hotels offering a reduced rate for IAEA participants, are listed on the following IAEA web page:
http://www-pub.iaea.org/iaeaevents/GeneralInfo/Guide/VIC.
Participants are advised to arrive at Checkpoint 1/Gate 1 of the VIC one hour before the start of the event on the first day in order to allow for timely registration. Participants will need to present an official photo identification document in order to be admitted to the VIC premises.
- Visas
Participants who require a visa to enter Austria should submit the necessary application to the nearest diplomatic or consular representative of Austria at least four weeks before they travel to Austria. Since Austria is a Schengen State, persons requiring a visa will have to apply for a Schengen visa. In States where Austria has no diplomatic mission, visas can be obtained from the consular authority of a Schengen Partner State representing Austria in the country in question.
