This database contains 20 research reactors performing Boron Neutron Capture Therapy distributed over 13 Member States.
The main application of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is cancer treatment. This technique, still in trial stages, consists in loading the tumour with Boron, for example, and then irradiating it. Highly ionizing alpha particules are produced by the interaction between neutron and boron. They have a range in human corpse of approximatively one diameter cell. This range and their high energy make BNCT efficient in killing the tumour cells in only few sessions without significant collateral damages.
